Sebastián Gordin: Two of Us
Sebastián Gordín (b. 1969) is an Argentine artist known for whimsical boxes, cartoonish magazine covers, and intricate miniature maquettes like The Museum of Zombie Art and Odeón movie theaters. He employs marquetry, using laser-cut wooden laminates, crafting works the size of album covers. Gordín's skill extends beyond drawing to designing, fitting, and gluing, setting him apart from conceptual artists who focus solely on ideas.
Early in his career, he created comics and later constructed incongruous objects and scale models. His artworks often reference Beatles songs, such as "All my loving" (2023), which presents a macabre scene contrasting with its namesake's romanticism. Gordín infuses humor, sometimes dark, reminiscent of Hopper, Goya, and Chris Ware, evident in pieces like "Nowhere man."
The works in Gordin's new exhibition at Sicardi Ayers Bacino; Two of Us resurrect a comic book style of depiction with a twist of Hopper, Goya, and Chris Ware.
