Liliana Porter: Red Brush and Other Situations

Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino is pleased to present Red Brush and Other Situations, our tenth solo exhibition featuring Liliana Porter [Argentine, b. 1941], on view by appointment through June 13, 2020.

A native of Buenos Aires, Liliana Porter relocated to New York in 1964. In 1965, she co-founded the New York Graphic Workshop, producing prints while redefining conventional models for making and distributing art. Porter’s art engages with notions of time, memory, and emotionality that define the human condition via the forms and movements of small flea-market figurines and found objects across austere backgrounds. Porter's dry wit and sophisticated sensibility carry through across media, and she describes her art as “interested in the simultaneity of humor and distress, banality and the possibility of meaning.”

Video-Show

Watch a video of Liliana Porter in her Rhinebeck, New York studio talking about the exhibition.

"The question of the meaning of time, is often present in my work. There is an attempt to make simultaneous dissimilar times: past, present and future may appear in an unexpected order. Real and virtual space could merge in the same point."
- Liliana Porter

"The small objects and figurines found in my recent paintings become protagonists of incidents that allude to natural and human-made disasters, as well as the possibility of reconstruction."
- Liliana Porter

“With all of Porter’s works there is always the sensation of a wink or knowing smile being implied. She is consistently the clever savant playing the role of the innocent child looking to understand or construct meaning. Her works perpetually escape irony however, through their projection of the sincerity of their investigations.”
- Tobias Ostrander, Independent Curator

“My work is … like watching a movie with the lights on…”
- Liliana Porter
